Lions outrun Panthers
UNSW jumped two places to fifth on the State Superleague U/12 table with a solid 2-0 over Western NSW Panthers.

The welcome return of globetrotting goalkeeper Miriam Charak allowed a first choice line up and coach Carlisle went for an attacking formation with both star strikers Sarah Macre and Grace Bambridge up front. The pair had each scored in last week's win over Bankstown and with the taste for goals, were in the mood for more.

The Lions started with a blistering opening stanza, Macre and Bambridge both smashing shots from distance that cleared the crossbar. More great lead-up work saw Sally Gosbell close in on a loose ball on the edge of the box and hit just wide, before a brilliant run and firm cross from the left by Macre just eluded the necessary touch to force the ball home.

In midfield, Liora Steigrad, Tamara Viner, Scarlett Cooke and Jaye Mellinek were holding possession and distributing smartly, while Naomi Sirmai and Gabi Bozic both showed good touch out wide. The defence, marshalled by Rebecca Kriesler alongside Erin Soller and Sarah Rose Keating was rarely threatened. However, half time saw the score still frustratingly deadlocked at 0-0.

The second half however opened with a bang: Macre made a number of strong bursts and a succession of corner kicks to Uni put the visitors under constant pressure. Then the elegant left-sided forward wove her magic, forcing her way through with touch and power before unleashing an unstoppable shot that ripped into the net.

Moments later an fine interchange had the ball bobbing about in the box before Macre thumped the loose ball in off the upright - this time with her right foot!

More chances came and went but the team were satisfied with what proved a comfortable win. Results elsewhere saw the win lift the black and gold two places to fifth ahead of their this week's Thursday evening catch-up game against competition leaders Northern Tigers and next Sunday's trip to Nowra to meet 3rd-placed Southern NSW. With the full team now in place and playing in position, the Lions will have a decent shot at continuing their winning form - unbeaten now in 4 games.
